The Challenge:

The state of Colorado, and the nation, have a growing workforce emergency as we start the 21st century. Increasing deficiencies exist between the supply and demand of workforce ready applicants exiting the educational pipeline with business needed skills that include: science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), and certain soft skills or highly desired work ethic values.

The BETR Project has been formed to “weave a community fabric” Comprised of business, education, government, and families to assist in overcoming this challenge. It is an initiative that needs your input and unique talent. The primary goal is to significantly reduce the leaks in the education pipeline and strengthen the output of skillful workers in your region, now and in the future.

The Problem:

There are large amounts of statistical data that show there are expanding segments of the young American population with low levels of education. This combined with the exiting from the workforce through retirement of the most highly educated generation in U.S. history, the Baby Boomers, is expected to cause a projected drop in the average education levels of the U.S. workforce in the coming decades under the current scenario.

This projected decline in educational levels directly coincides with the expanding growth and needs of knowledge-based businesses, requiring a flexible, self-directed, highly-educated workforce. At the same time, the expansion of a global economy allows business an increased opportunity in hiring workers overseas. As other developed nations continue to improve the education of their workforces, the United States and its workers will increasingly find themselves at a competitive disadvantage.
